1. A little cycling tour around Sligo & Mayo

Cycling fans will find that Enniscrone is a great base for discovery tours around Mayo and Sligo. For families I recommend getting a lift to Ballina and setting off for a family friendly cycle to discover the Monasteries of the Moy Greenway.

For everyone that feels safe cycling on, mostly very quiet, roads I recommend this 35km loop to Ballina and around the beautifully remote Irish country side.

This 78km loop adds 2 lakes and the coastal village Easky to the tour.

2. Salt, Sand & Ice Cream

The best thing about Enniscrone is obviously its unspoilt blue flag beach. Take a stroll along the dunes and go for a dip in the refreshing Atlantic. The best things in life are free 😉 but bring a little change for a ice-cream treat.

3. SUP

You can find Harbour SUP paddle from their home pier in Enniscrone, or sometimes down at the Quay in Ballina. SUPing is lots of fun either way and you should not leave the Atlantic Coast without giving it a go.

4. Surf

Welcome to the Irish surf coast! 7^th wave surf school and North West Surf School will teach you how to catch waves and surf into the sunset.

5. Playground and Crazy Golf

Close to the beach front this fun filled playground for children of all ages and also why not bring the family along and play a game of crazy golf.

6. Indoor water park

Especially for families, the Waterpoint Aqua Park can be a great activity for a rainy day. However, I still recommend going down to the beach, rainy days in Enniscrone can be magical! The waterpoint also features a well-equipped gym.

7. Seaweed baths

The perfect way to unwind after a long walk on the beach. The Kilcullen bathhouse offers a relaxed, therapeutic, natural and pure Irish experience.

8. Pitch n’ Putt

Enniscrone’s Pitch n’ Putt is the oldest Pitch n’ Putt course in the West of Ireland and a great activity for the whole family.

9. Iceford stables

Are you looking for a ride? The Iceford stables are offering horse back riding lessons, beach rides, pony camps and are located on the coast road between Enniscrone and Ballina.

10. Golf

The Enniscrone Golf course is among the finest and most challenging of traditional Irish links golf courses and offers 27 holes on 400 acres of magnificent links land, featuring the par 73 Dunes Championship Links Course.

The Ballina Greenway Monasteries of the Moy is the perfect cycling route for a family and for curious explorers who are hungry for nature and history.
For a starter, discover the beautiful trails of Belleek woods. Filled with red squirrels, herons, robins and fairies, the woods are a feast for the eye for all fans of local wildlife. For another bite of history find the concrete ship Crete Boom and try to spot the ‘Horse’s Grave’. Don’t forget to watch out for seals, hunting for salmon in the river.
Indulge yourself on a scenic cycle, following a quiet country road along the River Moy. Get a taste of an Irish monks life while exploring the Rosserk Friary and Moyne Abbey.
For seconds continue on to the small port village of Killala for a portion of history on the Irish-French connection.

All the fun with half the distance?

This cycle follows a classic ‘there-and-back’ route. If you want the full discovery experience but a shorter route, arrange for a drop off in Killala and explore the Monasteries of the Moy Greenway on the way back to Ballina. For the ultimate North Mayo sight seeing tour take the cycling route to Downpatrick Head along the North Mayo coast. The whole route is approx. 80km long with about 800m elevation.
Start by leisurely exploring the paths of Belleek woods. Visit the castle and find the concrete boat Crete Boom before heading to the start of the Ballina Greenway.
Discover the Monasteries of the Moy on the way to the historic port village Killala with its 12^th century round tower. You could add in a stop at the beautiful Ross beach, before heading for Lacken Strand, and continue along the stunning coast line to Downpatrick Head.
It’s time to get off the bike for a little stroll to take in the incomparable views over the coastline and the sea stack Dún Briste.
Continue on to Ballycastle. Mary’s cottage kitchen is the perfect opportunity for a lunch, or coffee and cake stop. Refreshed and fuelled make your way back to Ballina.

Full experience with half the distance

From Ballina this cycling route to Downpatrick Head is a great option for an active sight seeing day in Mayo. Is the route too long for you? Arrange for a ‘drop off’ in Ballycastle and explore the Mayo coast on a one-way cycle to Ballina. This way, you still get to explore the major sights of the North Mayo coast at your own pace and the total distance will only be 40km. This cycling route from Ballina to Enniscrone is one of my all time favourite ‘quick’ loops in the North Mayo and Sligo area. The loop is around 35km with about 250m of elevation. I like to fit this route in as morning cycling loop, but it can also be stretched to a full day of exploring Mayo & Sligo on the bike.

Following this cycling route from Ballina to Enniscrone is the perfect opportunity for a spin through the remote green countryside of Mayo & Sligo. You will reach Enniscrone towards the end of the loop, so you can enjoy a coffee, a dip in the sea or a full day of beach town fun.

I love a refreshing jump from Enniscrone pier to cool down after a cycle. A relaxing walk along the unspoilt beach is another great thing to do in this picturesque beach village. Check out the local cafes, pubs and coffee vans for lunch, before you tackle the few rolling hills of the Coast road on the way back to Ballina.

From the river – to the lakes – to the sea. This beautiful 76km loop could easily be the best cycling route in Mayo and Sligo.
Start cycling from Ballina and the route will take you through the windy gap by Lough Talt, over to Lough Easkey and back along the Sligo coast. This part of the Mayo and Sligo countryside is amazingly beautiful and completely off the beaten track. The roads are quiet except for lots of sheep traffic. The lakes are a great spot for a swim or a little picnic. Cycling back along the coast you will be passing through the picturesque seaside villages Easky & Enniscrone. Take the opportunity for a refreshing dip in the sea or a relaxed coffee on the beach, before heading back along the Coast road into Ballina.
